Stelle has re-opened its doors in the heart of Sandton and what a great new look! It has a far more upmarket feel to it but has maintained its homely feel. The decor is simple but classy and the two fireplaces in the indoor dining area keep the room warm and toasty.
The exterior of the menu has changed but the choice of food is mostly the same and the prices have not seemed to increase. They are in fact very good considering the price of most upmarket restaurants these days, specifically when comparing main meals. They have a lovely variety of local wines as well as Italian imports for the very enthusiastic connoisseurs.
We placed our orders and were promptly given polenta and potato balls served with a home-made tomato sauce, to snack on. A welcomed gesture which totally trumps the usual bread and balsamic.
To start we shared a deep-fried Mozzarella sandwich with rocket and an anchovy sauce on the side (R90). The sandwich was small but absolutely packed with cheese and I could have drunk the garlic and anchovy sauce it was SO delicious.
For mains we stuck with pastas – Spaghetti Vongole (R125) and home-made Ravioli filled with meat and accompanied by a meat and walnut sauce (R100). The portion sizes were generous and the Vongole was full of clams. The Ravioli was packed with flavour but shy on the walnut sauce and the Vongole, although saucy, lacked the wine and garlic punch. After enjoying the starters so much we were slightly disappointed, but having just arrived back from Italy, our senses were far more in-tune and perhaps critically so as we had extra-high expectations of the food.
The service was relaxed but on-point. Our waiter was attentive and there to top our glasses when needed. It was a quiet evening so the food did not take as long as the 20 minute wait we expected. The head chef did his rounds and made it clear that we were welcome to ask for things, when ordering, if there was something specific we wanted (i.e saucy Ravioli). The head of house was also friendly and happily showed us around afterwards when I questioned her about the outside area and private dining area.
After all the chatting we were also given some complimentary amaretto to try with their rich and creamy home-made pistachio gelato (R60) as well as their limoncello that is made using the lemons in their garden..
Wishing Stelle all the best in their new venue and we will definitely be back for more!
