I don’t know how, but up until last week, I had never heard of this place. Joburg’s restaurants never stop surprising me and there always seems to be endless choice!
Located in the unassuming Oaklands Centre, on the edge of Houghton somewhere between Melrose and Norwood. The coolest thing is that it is combined with a deli and store which sells loads of local and imported goods. From pre-cooked meals, cheeses and pesto’s to pasta, fresh bread and cakes..
You can feel it’s authentic from the time you walk in the door and get handed half a glass of Prosecco and a small plate of battered zucchini fries. We were also given bread on the house served with olive and artichoke tapenade, which was quite a treat. The room was quite hot but not uncomfortable thanks to the number of fans spread around.
I found the wine selection to be interesting but rather expensive. I really do believe that there should always be at least one house option available at a reasonable price for those that do not consider themselves to be wine connoisseurs.
For dinner we ordered Spaghetti with Tuna & Rosa tomatoes (R120) which came in a tomato based sauce and was served as a generous portion. We also ordered the special of the day – Ravioli filled with Porcini mushrooms and ricotta accompanied by a butter sage sauce (R100). Both dishes were quality and we enjoyed the food. Overall, the menu is quite pricey with your average meal costing about R120 bucks.
The service was good but could have been slightly more relaxed and interactive.
Overall, highly recommended and enjoyable! We managed to get the last table available on a Friday evening so be sure to book.
