So after a few weeks of being out of the dining game, due to exams, I finally got to head out to try a new spot in town. It’s located on the corner of Bolton and Jan Smuts in what looks to be a re-vamped building. There’s a lot of activity on this corner as there are a few places opening up around it.
There is an awesome feel to the place even before you step inside. It’s a really good-looking spot too with simple table decor and a tasteful interior. If you are just meeting someone for a drink then there is also a dedicated bar section.
Our waitress was very friendly and knew the menu well. The menu is however limited and rather pricey (R100-R200). I would really encourage the chef to add one or two more dishes to the menu, that are more affordable, so that people are not so restricted in their choices.
We started off well with a decent selection of wine (rather pricey/glass) and some interesting beers and cocktails available too. The Apple Juiep cocktail (R60) was bursting with flavours and was described as tasting like ‘Christmas’ by a friend of mine. We also got a taster of their fresh, warm bread which went down like a treat!
The food arrived and it was all well presented. We all chose different meals so we got a good idea of the standard of the food.
My Smoked Ricotta Gnocchi (R130) was one of the more ‘elaborate’ dishes (very tasty) being accompanied by olives, asparagus and brocolli stems. The Pork Belly (R140) and Rib Burger (R105) stuck to the more traditional way of being served. The Pork Belly was slightly dry, but nothing worth complaining about, and the burger seemed to go down well.
If you like Mussels (R140) and are looking for value-for-money, then it definitely stands out above the rest. The sauce accompanying the mussels was delicious and the lightly roasted bread served with garlic butter was well-used to soak it all up!
All-in-all a good dining experience. Spice it up with a few more menu options and there will be more of a reason to return!
P.S. I left my camera behind and was contacted by the restaurant the following day. I cannot thank you all enough for your honesty, I am so relieved!
