If I was asked to summarise La Mama in one word it would have to be…. Quaint.
I very seldom go back to restaurants because of the fact that Joburg has loads to offer and so many areas to visit. From time to time however, when I don’t feel like hunting for a new spot to try, this is my go-to Italian restaurant.
Nestled between Bryanston and Randburg you’ll find it on 90 Oxford Street in a little obscure centre. In summer there are a few tables to sit at outside but I tend to stick to being seated inside.
There’s a nice ambience with candles lit on every table. There is an older feel to the restaurant with starched, white table clothes and napkins. The manger is consistent and will generally be waiting to greet and seat you at the door. The waiters are smartly dressed and I have never experienced anything but good, friendly service.
Apparently the owner is an older, Italian lady who is also the chef. Pizza (R65-R100) and Pasta (R75-R100) would be the most common things on the menu but there are many other dishes as well and the specials of the day usually include some sort of fresh seafood.
They are extremely generous in the fact that every table gets a complimentary foccacia bread once the orders have been placed. (The downside to that is that I never feel like trying their pizzas after sharing one of them)
For this evening a friend and I met to share stories and eat pasta. It’s super homely food with no major fuss. The Carbonara (R85) is pretty saucy and comes with thicker sliced pancetta that is slightly crispy. The Tortelloni Al Forno (R89) is a vegetarian option of tortelloni filled with spinach and pasta and baked in a napolitana, cream & cheese sauce.
Open every day of the week for lunch and dinner, I’d recommend it to anyone. Make sure to book though because most evenings I have been there it does fill up rather nicely.
