Dosa Hut, Fordsburg

Dosa Hut Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

So in the spirit of Eid, I thought a review of a Halaal restaurant would be in order this week. South Indian food is not very available in Joburg, so it was really nice to get out to Fordsburg with a group of friends to try something different.

Located a few streets down from the famous Mint Street, on 48 General Road we eventually found parking and headed in for the evening. (The area is not exactly that safe so if you’ve never been at night, I’d suggest going in a group)

The interior won’t blow you away but it’s simple and pleasant. It was quite full during the evening  so make sure to book if there are a few of you going.

To start we ordered jugs of their famous Mint & Lemon juice and Dosa’s to share. We ordered a Paneer (fresh cheese mostly found in South Asian countries) & Cheese Dosa (R65) while the others all stuck to Aloo (potato) Dosa’s (R35) as well as a plate of chicken samoosas.

Paneer & Cheese Dosa

So what is a Dosa? Its a thin ‘crepe’ originating from the south of India with its main ingredients being fermented rice and urad beans and is made on a hot plate.

For our main meals 1 dish of ‘Bindi Do Pyaza’ (Okra with tomato and onion gravy –R65) was ordered and then everybody else ordered curries. Their curries are pretty well-priced: chicken (R69-R74) or lamb (R84-R94)  and the portions are a decent size. Their food is extremely spicy though – and very brightly coloured – and although it may have been an exception that day, even my mild was hot!

This was also my first time trying Paratha’s (a type of flatbread layered with butter – R10) which I now prefer to Naan, if they’re made correctly.

The service is the main downfall which is why the rating drops to ‘average’ and I hope to see it improve if I do return.

Overall a very affordable evening (less than R100 per person, if you share a curry)  with very many carbohydrates consumed. It was lovely because it was different to what we usually have and the new dishes were a treat to try!

P.S in case you didn’t read the Halaal in the beginning: strictly no alcohol..
