After much contemplation on which restaurant to visit in Maboneng, I settled on this little spot. There’s something magical about Maboneng, this little piece of happiness surrounded by a more daunting part of Joburg.
Mama Mexicana is located on the well-known Fox Street and is neighbours to the ‘Arts on Main’ market.
The decor is really simple, which fits well with a Mexican themed restaurant, and suited my taste down to the ground. The kitchen, despite its small size, managed to keep up with the orders for the evening and did not leave us disappointed.
Starters and Mains range from about R40-R70 and we made sure we shared meals to be able to get a taste of everything. The table raved about the Jalapeno Poppers to start and my favourite dish for the evening was the Chicken Chimichanga (a deep fried, pastry pocket). I was slightly disappointed with the size and presentation of the Nachos but the rest of the dishes were great! The wait between starters and mains was enough to get one’s appetite ready for the next meal but if you’re in a rush, I’d phone before and pre-order your meals.
I am not fond of Tequila but their Margaritas are tasty and there are a variety of flavours to choose from. The house wine is inexpensive and decent and there are also a few beers to choose from.
Although friendly, the service is slightly lacking. Small things, like taking the plates from the table, needed to be done more promptly but it didn’t detract from the experience.
Thanks for a great evening out Maboneng and Mama Mexicana!!
